GMU marks the 101st anniversary of maritime education in Poland
17th June saw the marking of the 101st anniversary of maritime education in Poland on campus at the Gdynia Maritime University.
The ceremony began punctually at 8 a.m. with the traditional raising of the flag on the university’s main building and was attended by the University’s Senate, employees, students, and alumni who gathered to watch in the square in front of the University.
The Gdynia Maritime University standard was paraded ceremonially by the GMU’s Guard of Honour, accompanied by the Maritime Orchestra of the Border Guard Unit. The Orchestra performed the national anthem during the raising of the Polish Merchant Navy’s flag.
The ceremony was followed by Holy Mass lead by Father Edward Pracz - Pastor of the People of the Sea - and celebrated in the intentions of the University’s employees, students, doctoral students, and alumni. The mass was assured an atmosphere of solemnity by the Gdynia Maritime University Academic Choir and the Guard of Honour.
At 10:00 a.m. in the T. Meissner auditorium, the Ceremonial Opening of the GMU Senatorial Sitting took place and was attended by the members of the Senate, representatives of the University Council, as well invited guests. The ceremony was broadcast online with an air of celebration added to the proceedings by a performance by the GMU Academic Choir.
A speech was given by the Rector of the Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, PhD, DSc, FRIN, FNI, Master Mariner, with Director of the Maritime Education Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure Janusz Karp also taking the floor. The Rector gave awards to a number of Gdynia Maritime University employees for their exceptional professional achievements during the year 2020.
The ceremony came to an end following the Gdynia Maritime University’s Academic Choir’s rendition of the hymn Gaude Mater Polonia.
