GMU in Puck to Mark 102nd Anniversary of Poland’s Marriage to the Sea

10th February 1920 is an important date in Polish history. On that day, General Józef Haller, the commander of the Polish armies, wed Poland to the sea by throwing a platinum ring donated by the residents of Gdansk into the Bay of Puck. The General wore a second identical ring on his finger for the rest of his life. The act symbolised the country’s reconnection to the Baltic under the Treaty of Versailles.

The 102nd anniversary of the historic event was attended by the Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, Dr Mirosław Czechowski, and members of the GMU Guard of Honour.

As is tradition, the celebration took part in the fishing port in Puck with a Polish Navy honour guard also in attendance. Following the presentation of decorations and speeches prepared for the occasion, a wreath was thrown into the bay from onboard a Navy helicopter.

The event came to a close with the placing of flowers at the memorial statue of Józef Haller along with a wreath offered by the University delegation in the name of the Rector, Senate and entire academic community.
