GMU Researcher Awarded "Miniatura 6" Grant

Dr Emilia Baszanowska, from the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Marine Engineering at GMU, has been granted funding for scientific activity as part of the National Science Centre's MINIATURA 6 Competition.

In the final round of the MINIATURA 6 competition, 194 scientific activities, including 67 in the field of science and technology, were qualified for funding. The winners will receive more than PLN 7.7m for preliminary and pilot studies, internships or consultation and research trips.

Dr Baszanowska was included in a group of 67 science and technology laureates. Dr Baszanowska's research project entitled "Quantum fluorescence efficiency as a tool for the distinction of marine pollutants with emulsions of petroleum-based substances from natural fish fats" focuses on the widely discussed social debate on ways to combat negative climate change and protect the environment, gained the recognition of the competition committee.

The MINIATURA competition aims to support scientific activities involved in the preparation of a research project, which will be submitted to the National Science Centre or other national or international competitions. One of the objectives of the competition is to encourage the participation of researchers working in smaller academic centres and to improve regional balance.

Over five editions, the competition has to date financed more than 3, 300 scientific activities. The sixth edition of the competition was held between 1st February and 31st July 2022. 1815 applications were submitted, out of which 502 were qualified, including 173 in science and technology.

Candidates for the MINIATURA 6 grant are predominantly researchers who completed a doctorate at the beginning of their career (1,700 of them have a doctorate, with more than 800 qualifying in 2016 or later). More applications were received from female researchers, who also made up more than half of those awarded, with financing granted to 290 female researchers and 212 male researchers.

In total, the Miniatura 6 competition awarded almost PLN 20 million, and in its final round, more than PLN 7.7 million.

This is the sixth research activity financed as part of the Miniatura competitions carried out at Gdynia Maritime University. In previous editions of the competition, financing was awarded to:
