GMU Takes Part in 25th Polish Radio and Copernicus Centre Science Picnic

The 25th Polish Radio and Copernicus Science Centre Science Picnic took place on Saturday 21st May in Warsaw. As the main topic of this year’s event was “Water”, naturally several representatives of Gdynia Maritime University were in attendance. Staff within the Department of Industrial Product Quality and Chemistry within the Faculty of Management and Quality Science put together a very engaging programme connected with the recent “Clean Sea Academy” project.

GMU participated in the picnic as a beneficiary of the National Research and Development Centre. This was reflected in the content of the University’s stand, which allowed participants to explore the challenges associated with the Baltic and assess the level of pollution in its waters by carrying out chemical field tests.

The issue of microplastic pollution of the sea also attracted a lot of interest. Visitors to our stand could view the process of degradation of plastics by seawater, and volunteers took the challenge of leading a rescue operation at sea to protect the marine ecosystem from the effects of hazardous chemical spills.

We also made sure there was something of interest for the youngest scientists, with quizzes, crosswords, word puzzles and colourings. The event at the Copernicus Science Centre was also an opportunity to promote the University. GMU teaching staff were on hand to answer questions on our study programmes from interested participants.
