Sailing and Watersports Centre Supports Young Scientists

The Sailing and Watersports Centre’s Yacht, s/y Almak, was active in the Port of Gdynia on Friday (20th May). Normally used for training purposes, on this occasion, the vessel was involved in research conducted in the harbour’s waters.

The research was the work of Faculty of Navigation student Julia Kosiak and Deputy Dean of the Faculty, Dr Adam Kaizer.

The work involved the collection of bottom sediment samples from port basin 4 and preliminary checks of the thickness of the metal walls of the Rotterdam Dock. The samples were collected by Julia using a Van Veen sediment sampler and will be used in her undergraduate thesis.

Dr Kaizer carried out the preliminary measurements on the dock walls using a remote-controlled underwater ROV vehicle.

Both Julia and Dr Kaizer are involved in the work of Innovative Transport and Logistics Systems Scientific Circle, Julia as a member and Dr Kazier as supervisor.

The Almak performed superbly in its new role, showing that the Sailing and Watersports Centre’s vessels can be used successfully in the research work of GMU students and staff.
