3rd Edition of ‘Journey Into Science’ to Open in October
At the end of October 2023, further lectures for secondary school students will be held as part of a two-year project carried out by the Faculty of Management and Quality Science at Gdynia Maritime University entitled: “Rejs do nauki” [Journey into science]. To date, 730 pupils from 27 secondary schools from the provinces of Pomerania, Kujawy-Pomerania and Warmia-Masuria have taken part.
The programme of lectures and workshops is aimed at young people who will soon be considering their options for further education and development. The lecturers, researchers and academic teachers within the Faculty of Management and Quality Science, through the presentation of their scientific achievements, aim to expose secondary school pupils to new areas of study and science and increase their knowledge on current issues, including in relation to climate change, ecological threats and health risks.
During the lectures, the youngsters will learn about the origin of amber and the types of inclusions present in it, the sources of renewable energy from marine areas, how they were obtained, and how they could contribute to the recovery and preservation of marine animal species and the correct segregation, disposal and recycling of waste. Lessons will also focus on the effects of nutrition on the gut-brain axis which is one of the elements that regulates the response of the nervous system to stress, the effects of food on human health, and the risks associated with the consumption of various foods. Participants shall also learn about the growing number of eating disorders and the determinants of the development of these disorders in the 21st century, which is of great importance in the prevention of health problems. Students will be informed of the most important challenges posed by the development of modern electronic business markets, their characteristics and role. In addition, lectures are also planned on the role of maritime ports and terminals in the global logistics system.
The project is co-financed by the Ministry for Education and Science as part of its “Social Responsibility of Science” project. Module name: Popularyzacja nauki i promocja sportu [Popularisation of Science and Promotion of Sport], project number SONP/SP/550352/2022. Funding: PLN 10,000.
