GMU in Blue for World Maritime Day

The buildings of institutions around the world connected with the maritime industry were lit up in blue on 28th September 2023 in celebration of World Maritime Day. The initiative is organised by the International Maritime Organization. As in previous years, our University got involved, illuminating the main University building on Morska Street and the building of the Faculty of Navigation with a unique, blue glow.

The main theme of this year's maritime community celebration is "MARPOL at 50 - Our commitment goes on." 50 years ago, the MARPOL Convention was established - a ground-breaking maritime treaty aimed at preventing pollution by ships. In connection with the Convention's Jubilee, Kittack Lim, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), spoke to the members of the organisation.

World Maritime Day was established by the United Nations in 1978 on the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention establishing the (IMO).

The initiative was set up to highlight the importance of the seas for our planet and promote the protection and sustainable use of marine resources.
