GMU Staff Member Receives Mayor of Gdynia Award

Hanna Benkowska, a member of staff in the GMU main library, has received an award by Major of Gdynia Wojciech Szczurek during a ceremony celebrating library and librarian day.

Library and Library Day is a celebration initiated in 1985 by the Association of Polish Libraries. Normally held on 8th May, this year’s event was held in Gdynia at the Consulate of Culture on Wednesday 17th May.

During the ceremony, the activities of Gdynia's Libraries during the past year was summarised. The work and professional achievements of the library staff were highlighted and awards presented to outstanding librarians by Mayor Wojciech Szczurek.

Gdynia Public Library is one of the best institutions of its kind in Poland. Its branches provide modern, welcoming, open meeting spaces. But its success is largely thanks to its people - exceptionally educated, very active, creative librarians that attract more people to be involved in library initiatives every year. Librarian's Day is a chance to thank on behalf of the entire community all those connected with the Library for their creative work - said Wojciech Szczurek, President of Gdynia.

Among those awarded was Hanna Benkowska from the Main Gdynia Maritime University Library,   who was recognised for her "extreme kindness and openness in communication with users, as well as for her involvement in the work of the library."

It is a great honour for me, I sincerely did not expect this award - commented Hanna Benkowska, curator of the University's Main Library.
