First Autonomous Transport Conference Held at Faculty of Navigation
On 10 December 2024, the first conference dedicated to autonomous transport was held at the GMU Faculty of Navigation. Taking part in the event were 80 science and industry representatives, who during the plenary sessions, discussion panels, and poster sessions, discussed autonomous transport, and R&D, including the exploitation of its outcomes. Also touched upon were matters concerning the implementation of new technologies in maritime, river, rail, and road autonomous transport.
The event, organised by Gdynia Maritime University, the Motor Transport Institute, and the Office for Railway Transport, was opened by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, who addressed the participants of the conference, gave an overview of its purpose, and presented the programme of events:
In October in China, during the World Congress of the International Association of Institutes of Navigation IAIN, we discussed the way forward in the introduction of autonomous transport, taking into account both the technological and sociological factors involved.
Today’s conference at Gdynia Maritime University is unique on a national scale, as in one venue we have gathered representatives of rail, air, and marine transport. The first part of the conference will be dedicated to general aspects of autonomous transport, whereas, because our work at Gdynia Maritime University is predominantly dedicated to maritime subjects, the second part of the conference will focus on maritime transport.
Also welcoming the guests was GMU Associate Professor Dr Zbigniew Burciu, the conference organiser.
Others taking to the floor during the event were representatives connected with transport and the co-organisers of the event: Marcin Trela - Vice President of the Office for Railway Transport, Grzegorz Pettke, President of the Management Board of the Polish Registry of Shipping; Marek Pawlik, Deputy Director for Rail interoperability of the Rail Institute; and Anna Białkowska, Deputy Director of the Maritime Authority in Gdynia.
The event was organised under the patronage of HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit; The Director of the Motor Transport Institute in Warsaw, Professor Marcin Ślęzak, and the President of the Railway Transport Office in the Centre for IMO Affairs at the Polish Registry of Shipping, Ignacy Góry.
The conference, which is planned to be held periodically, will provide a forum for the exchange of opinions, the presentation of R&D works, research outcomes and their implementation, in areas concerning all means of autonomous transport, including MASS.
