GIS Day 2024 Held at GMU
On 19 November 2024, GIS Day, an international educational event dedicated to geographical information systems (GIS) and their practical application, was held in the T. Meissner auditorium at Gdynia Maritime University. The event was organised by GMU student scientific circle loGIStic, and student scientific circle HEVELIUS from Gdańsk University of Technology.
The first presentation at this year’s event was given by Marcin Marciniak from the State Forestry Agency in Kartuzy. The talk entitled “Can GIS help us to understand the forest”, discussed the role of GIS in the management and protection of forest environments. Other speakers included Paulina Pisarczyk and Tymon Chwalisz from the Spatial Planning Office in Gdynia, who discussed the application of GIS in drawing up a general plan of the city, underlining the importance of the technology in urban planning.
Jarosław Sadowski of EnviroSolutions gave a talk on the topic of commercial GIS software, highlighting the benefits of tailoring GIS systems to individual needs and the savings associated with their use. Kamil Onoszko from the State Forestry Agency in Giżycko presented the use of remote sensing in monitoring forest disturbances, showing how geospatial data support forest management.
Grzegorz Szalast, from the company GISPRO, discussed geospatial data acquisition in a variety of environments, looking at land, water and air perspectives. The possibilities provided by the use of AI in connection with GIS technology was the topic of a presentation by Maria Sokołowska from GIS software company Esri Polska, whereas Karol Stachura from the Pomeranian Marshall’s Office introduced the topic of standardisation of GIS data, crucial for interaction across different systems and formats.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the poster session. GIS Day finished with an interactive field game which provided the chance to put into practice their new knowledge.
The event was attended by geoinformation enthusiasts, including students, academic staff and industry representatives, popularising the innovative applications of GIS technology.
