On 11 September 2024, a ceremonial congress of the National Department for Maritime Safety took place at the Centre for International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Affairs at the Polish Academy of Sciences. The sitting also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS 1974). The congress was attended by HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit.

Also taking part in the event was Ms Sonia Knobloch-Sieradzka - Deputy Director of the Department of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Mr Grzegorz Pettke - President of the Polish Register of Shipping, and Mr Aleksander Łęgowski - the Director of the Shipping Division at PRS.

Adopted on 1st November 1974 by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), SOLAS is a key international treaty aimed at improving the safety of life at sea and has been in force since 25 May 1980. The Convention has developed with numerous amendments over the years and is preceded by earlier treaties from 1914 (after the Titanic RMS disaster), 1929, 1948 and 1960, also aimed at improving the safety of shipping.
