Gdynia Maritime University GMU

More than 1500 participants turned out at Gdynia Maritime University on Friday 8 March for what was a very successful Open Day. Visitors came from all over Poland to take part in interesting lectures and workshops, simulator demonstrations, talks with students, and to get to know Poland's first maritime university and the opportunities it has to offer.

Prospective students visited GMU at its main building on Morska Street and the Faculty of Navigation in the city centre, with a variety of workshops, lectures, and simulator visits prepared across the University's two locations.  

Between the hours of 9:00 and 14:00, organised groups and individual visitors took part in the attractions prepared by the University's four faculties:  Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management and Quality Science and Navigation.

In front of the GMU main building, the EVPL Electrical Vehicles [EVPL Pojazdy Elektryczne] Student Scientific Circle presented their electric cars and the specialist vehicle Toyota Tundra.

In the T.Meissner hall, members of the various student scientific circles at the University discussed their activities: EVPL Electrical Vehicles [EVPL Pojazdy Elektryczne]; LoGIStic; CARGO Commodity Science [Naukowe Koło Towaroznawstwa CARGO]; Investor [Inwestor]; SeaQuest Underwater Research [Naukowego Koła Badań Podwodnych SeaQuest]; E-Business [Koła e-Biznesu]; NAUTICA; Human Machine Interface; Internet of Things and IoT Embedded Systems [Internet Rzeczy i Systemy Wbudowane IOtes]; Navigator [Nawigator]; TRANSLOG Transport and Logistics Scientific Circle [Naukowe Koło Transportu i Logistyki TRANSLOG]; Innovative Transport and Logistics Systems [Naukowe Koło Innowacyjnych Systemów Transportowo-Logistycznych]. Especially for Open Day, the student members put together interesting attractions, including experiences, demonstrations, and even competitions.

There was a stand providing information on opportunities as part of the Erasmus+ programme, where those interested spoke to representatives about the involvement of GMU students in international exchanges and how their experiences gained as part of the programme can be helpful in their professional or scientific careers.

As this year's Open Day took place on International Women's Day a specially prepared presentation aimed at future female students was given by HM Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, entitled "A few loose reflections on selected incidents from the history of geographical discovery”.   

At 10:00, 11:00 and 13:00 hours, the Deputy Rector for Education, Dr Sambor Guze, presented the opportunities for higher education at Gdynia Maritime University and details and important dates in the admissions process. 

Another presentation was given by Zosia Olchowy, the 2nd mate onboard the famous frigate and Aleksandra Marcinkowska, the ship's steward. The young female seafarers discussed their daily activities at sea, seagoing service, voyages to date, and hobbies.

During the Gdynia Maritime University Open Day, the help of GMU students involved in tours of faculties and providing information on where lectures and workshops were taking place was invaluable.

Members of the GMU Student Parliament welcomed prospective students and visitors in a specially prepared relaxation zone, where they provided coffee and talked about life at the University. All visiting ladies were, of course, given flowers.

"Overall, there was a lot of interest shown in the University," - summarised the Chair of the Student Parliament, Tobiasz Chęciński of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering - "The university's faculties also saw a lot of interest from prospective students who decided to spend several hours of Women's Day with us!"    

The event also gathered interest from the media. Speaking to future and current students, as well as members of the teaching staff, were reporters from Radio Gdańsk, Radio Eska, and Dziennik Bałtycki.

All visitors were given information materials and freebies.

The next Open Day is planned for November of this year.
