GMU Takes Part in 90th Anniversary of Dar Pomorza’s Round-the-World Voyage
HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, took part in the celebrations commemorating the start of the Dar Pomorza’s voyage around the world on Monday 16 September 2024. The sailing ship’s historic voyage was the initiative of Professor/Captain Daniel Duda, Rector of the Higher Maritime School, during the years 1972-1981.
Guests at the ceremony were welcomed by the Deputy Director for Substantive Affairs at the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk, Dr Marcin Westphal, and the story of the voyage, which lasted almost a year, was presented by Rear Admiral Czesław Dyrcz.
In connection with the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Poland (the so-called ‘Maritime Basilica’) and the 85th anniversary of the 1st Eucharistic procession by the sea, the head priest of the Church of Our Lady, Queen of Poland in Gdynia, presented the HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, with a medal. HM The Rector was also presented with the Honorary Order of the Piłsudski Association of the Republic of Poland.
The ceremony came to a close with the symbolic donation of a souvenir porthole from Dar Młodzieży’s first voyage by Professor Daniel Duda to the International Maritime Museum in Gdańsk.
