In Honour of Those Who Never Returned From Sea...
The beginning of November is the time when we remember all those close to our hearts that are no longer among us but remain in our memory forever.
Today, especially our thoughts are directed towards the sea and all those who went to sea, never to return. We remember seamen, sailors, fishermen, and rescuers who gave their lives on the seas and oceans of the world, and leaving for the eternal watch.
In Gdynia, the monument "for those who have departed for the eternal watch" is a tangible symbol of the memory of those who never returned from the sea. The provocative figure of a distraught woman staring into the vastness of the sea calls on us to remember those for whom the sea became their final, eternal port.
November is also a time to remember those involved in the education of the Polish Merchant Navy personnel, those who established and developed maritime education and led with an example of self-sacrifice and good moral standing, to the benefit of maritime Poland and in honour of the white and red flag.
On the afternoon of Wednesday 30 October 2024, a short ceremony was held, during which, on behalf of the entire academic community at Gdynia Maritime University, the Deputy Rector for Education, Dr Sambor Guze lay flowers at the base of the monument in the company of the GMU Guard of Honour.
May we honour their memory!
