GMU Awarded Two New Patents

The Polish Patent Office has awarded Gdynia Maritime University exclusive rights for two inventions developed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering:

  • A method and a circuit for measuring the turn-on and turn-off energy of power bipolar transistors with an isolated gate, invented by Professor Krzysztof Górecki and Dr Paweł Górecki, exclusive rights number: PL 246146;
  • A method and a circuit for measuring the thermal resistance of a soldered connection of a power transistor, invented by Professor Krzysztof Górecki, Dr Paweł Górecki, and Associate Professor Adrian Pietruszka (a GMU doctoral candidate), number of exclusive rights number: PL246155.

Patent PL 246146 describes a method and circuit for measuring the turn-on and turn-off energy of power bipolar transistors with an isolated gate. The invention is applicable in the quality control of semiconductor power devices for the electronics and electrical engineering industries. The patented solution uses a different measurement concept, i.e., the values of switching on and off energy determined based on the temperature measurement of the transistor housing in a fixed state, which eliminates the need for measuring probes that introduce parasitic capacitances into the measuring system and which are a significant cause of measurement errors.

Patent PL 246155 includes the method and system of measuring the thermal resistance of the soldered power transistor connection. The invention is used to control the quality of the surface assembly of semiconductor power instruments on printed circuit boards with aluminium cores for the electronic and electrotechnical industries. The invention aims to identify the quality of the fixing of semiconductor power instruments on printed circuit boards with an aluminium core, which allows for the assessment and increase of the life of the printed circuit board. The invention received positive appraisal at the 23rd International Warsaw Inventions Show, where it was awarded a bronze medal.

Congratulations to the creators of these inventions!
