Inaugural Phase of Tricity Open Cup in Orienteering Gets Underway at GMU
On the evening of Thursday 23 January 2025, the inaugural phase of the Tricity Open Cup in Orienteering (TrOP) took place on parts of the GMU campus and in the surrounding forested area. The Cup consists of 10 monthly competitions to be hosted by Tricity higher educational institutions and various urban districts in Gdynia and Gdańsk. In addition to the sporting nature of the event, in which approximately 60 people took part in 4 routes of varying levels of difficulty, this first stage aimed to popularise the event and orienteering as a sport and outdoor activity. The youngest participant involved was 4 years old and the oldest was 71.
The Open Cup in Orienteering is held regardless of the weather and combines elements of sport, navigation (sense of direction, map reading, route planning, independent decision making), and competition with good fun. Specially prepared detailed maps on a scale of 1:4000 were provided to participants at the start point of the orienteering course. The maps showed the positions of a dozen or so control points located on the GMU main campus and in the surrounding area. The courses varied in length, from 1 to 4.6 km on a straight line, as well as level of difficulty. Confirmation of reaching the checkpoints in the order provided on the maps was carried out using an electronic chip and SportIdent’s (SI) contactless punching system, Air.
The event was organised by Azymut 45 Gdynia sports club, with the assistance of the GMU Faculty of Navigation. The event coordinator was Piotr Kopacz of the GMU Department of Navigation, who also took part in the longest orienteering course.
