Scholarly Evenings at GMU – 23 April 2025
On 23 April 2025, GMU will hold another lecture as part of its Scholarly Evenings with Gdynia Maritime University.
The topic of this week’s popular science lecture will be "Paradoxes and Complexities of Obesity".
Obesity is a serious, timeless, and global health problem. It was well described in ancient times, and humanity has yet to overcome it. With the development of civilization, the issue has intensified and completely spiralled out of control. Today, when talking about the scale of this phenomenon, it is directly referred to as a pandemic.
The lecture will present the issue of obesity on many levels: health, physiological, genetic, social, cultural, and psychological. The aim of the lecture will be to highlight the multidimensional nature of obesity, which makes it such a challenging opponent. During the lecture, attention will also be drawn to the paradoxes of obesity, which are often fed by stereotypes functioning in society.
