The International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. The primary task of the IMO is to create effective, widely accepted and implemented legal frameworks for the wider maritime industry.

GMU experts act on behalf of the Polish government within the IMO forum through their involvement in the sessions of the Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), the Subcommittee on the Safety of Navigation, Radiocommunication, and Search and Rescue (NCSR), the Subcommittee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC), the Subcommittee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping, the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction, as well as any ad hoc work groups. The experts analyse matters discussed at the sessions of IMO bodies and engage in preparing Poland's stance as well as applications resulting from IMO resolutions.
