NF-IAMU GMP Faculty Fellowship Programme

At the 20th Commemorative Annual General Assembly held in October 2019, Dr Yohei Sasakawa, the Honorary Chair of IAMU, declared the establishment of the Nippon Foundation-International Association of Maritime Universities (NF-IAMU) Fellowship Programme for IAMU member university students and academic staff that embody the Global Maritime Professional (GMP) Initiative and incorporate the GMP Body of Knowledge into their curricula.

 

Description of the fellowship

The NF-IAMU Global Maritime Professional (GMP) Faculty Fellowship is targeted at IAMU member university faculty members who have the potential to facilitate the implementation of the GMP Initiative and carry out research that supports the goals of the initiative. Fellowships will be awarded to individuals to carry out research in the context of the acquisition of a doctoral-level degree. Such individuals will be full-time faculty members of IAMU member universities and will carry out their doctoral studies at an IAMU member university. In all cases, Fellowship awardees will commit to serving their nominating universities for a minimum of 3 years after the award of their PhD.

Eligibility for application to the programme

  • IAMU member university
  • Submission of a Declaration Letter with signature by the President or official representative
  • Submission of forms and support documents

  3. Two academic references
  4. Achievement certificates and transcript of grades
  5. Evidence of acceptance to a PhD programme

  8. Budget Form (Appendix 5)

Amount of funds

The amount of funds available from the fellowship is a maximum of 100,000 USD and is intended to cover tuition and living costs for a PhD over a maximum of 5 years. A maximum of 3 fellowships will be awarded per annum. Fellowship funds will be disbursed in 3 to 5 instalments based on the proposed individual study plan.

Criteria for the award of a faculty fellowship

  • Post-graduate degree in an area relevant to GMP learning outcomes.
  • Acceptance of a research proposal and admission into a doctoral programme of an IAMU member university.
  • For non-native speakers, English language proficiency, e.g.,
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 96+ in the internet-based test / 590+ in the paper-based test
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) band 7.0 or above
    • Cambridge Proficiency Examination at grade A or B
    • GCE O-level or the equivalent: A good pass grade
    • An equivalent level in another English proficiency test

Even where the PhD is carried out in a language other than English, the Fellowship awardee will be required to submit progress reports as well as a final report to IAMU in English.

Research areas

  • Research deliverables (publications, reports, etc.) in areas relevant to GMP learning outcomes.

Experience

  • Practical maritime experience. Seafaring qualifications and experience—especially at the management level—will enhance the standing of the application.
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience in maritime higher education institutions in subject areas related to GMP learning outcomes.
  • The use of innovative learning activities related to GMP learning outcomes

Leadership and mentoring abilities

  • Leadership in academic, non-academic, or community contexts where the principles and aims of the GMP Initiative are evident.
  • The interest, valuing and affective orientations towards GMP ideals and goals.
  • Ability to mentor students.

 

Required outcomes of award of GMP Faculty Fellowship

  • Submit a progress report during every year of the PhD programme and a final report.
  • A PhD degree of relevance to the GMP Initiative and publications (monograph and/or journal articles evidencing the work done.
  • Innovative contribution to the furtherance of the GMP Initiative.
  • Contribution to their nominating university (IAMU member).
  • Dissemination of research outcomes in IAMU Conferences.
  • Active participation in the membership of the “NF-IAMU GMP Fellowship Network”
  • Active participation in IAMU activities through the nominating university.

 

Factors for selection

  • The nominated faculty member’s ability to make a substantive long-term contribution to the GMP initiative and the IAMU community after the award of a PhD.
  • The degree of alignment of the research proposal with the relevant GMP learning outcomes.
  • It is strongly preferred that awardees study for the PhD in an IAMU member university other than their nominating university, to entrench the interaction between IAMU member universities.
  • Equity criteria, including gender, racial and regional representation, disabilities (as relevant, e.g., considerations related to exclusions within the context of a seagoing career as established by international law.
  • Equity in respect of representation from IAMU member universities.
  • The standing of the nominating university with respect to the implementation of the GMP initiative.
  • The nominating university’s involvement in IAMU activities (to be weighted).
  • The nominated faculty member should not have any other co-temporal fellowship covering the same programme of study.
  • Only one faculty member should be selected from any one university over any two-year period.
  • The nominated faculty member should represent exceptional faculty members from the university.
  • Each nomination should be considered holistically, with all factors and criteria (academics, experience, perspectives, aspirations, values, and accomplishments) considered.
