Osaka 83
The first voyage of the Dar Młodzieży outside of European waters was organised in response to an invitation received from the organisers for the ship to take part in a rally to mark the 400th anniversary of the castle in Osaka, Japan.
The voyage began on 22 June 1983 and lasted 217 days, during which time the tall ship sailed 28,065 NM, visiting ports in Lisbon, Said, Djibouti, Colombo, Singapore, Osaka, Yokohama, Nakhodka, Shanghai, Manila, Penang, Malaga, and Rotterdam.
The ship made an effective entrance into the port of Osaka. On the last straight, all sails were set and the Dar Młodzieży glided majestically into port, where it was welcomed by the claps of the crowd gathered on the quay. During a 12-day stay, more than 200,000 guests passed on board the ship.
The captain of the ship was Tadeusz Olechnowicz, and taking part in the voyage were 119 1st-year students from the Faculty of Navigation and 3 4th-year students from the Faculty of Administration at the Higher Maritime School in Gdynia, as well as 3 4th-year students from the Faculty of Navigation at the Higher Maritime School in Szczecin.
During its journey to Japan, the Dar Młodzieży crossed the equator for the first time, marking the event with a traditional equatorial baptism. The frigate returned to Gdynia on 23 February 1984.
