Professor Piotr Jędrzejowicz was born on 3rd September 1942 in Warsaw. He graduated in 1964 from the Maritime Faculty of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot, and in 1969 obtained a doctorate at the same School for a dissertation entitled "Economic decisions in the operation of shipping lines". He obtained his postdoctoral degree in 1974 at the University of Gdańsk for his dissertation "Decision-making within a shipping company using the methods of game theory and heuristic programming". In 1982, he obtained the title of associate professor and became a full professor in 1989.
Work in the Maritime Industry and Science
During the years 1962-1970, he worked successively at the Polfracht Enterprise in Gdynia, the Chinese-Polish Ship Society in Gdynia, and the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk. Since 1970, he has worked at the University (first Gdynia Maritime Higher School, then Gdynia Maritime Academy, and finally Gdynia Maritime University), and has held the posts of reader, lecturer, associate professor, and full professor. During this time, he has served as the head of the Ship Operation Department at the Faculty of Navigation, the head of the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Navigation, the head of the Department of Computer Science and Systems Analysis at the Faculty of Navigation, and for the last 20 years has headed the Department of Information Systems at the Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Commodity Science of Gdynia Maritime University. During the years 1989 to 2002, he acted as Poland's permanent representative to the IMO in London. He has also held several elected posts, including rector of Gdynia Maritime University for the term 1984-1989, Dean of the Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Commodity Science from 2002 to 2008, deputy rector for science at Gdynia Maritime Academy for the term 2008-2012, and rector of Gdynia Maritime University for a second time for the term 2012-2016.
Scientific Publications and Monographs
He is the author of some 350 scientific publications, including four books and over 150 publications indexed in Web of Science databases, and the scientific editor and co-author of three scientific monographs written in English. He was also a member of the programme committees of several dozen international scientific conferences, on many of which he held the role of chair. According to current Web of Science data, the work of Professor Jędrzejowicza has been cited 820 times and has an H-index of 14.
Academic Supervisor of Scientific Works
He has supervised 14 completed doctoral dissertations, over 400 diploma and master's theses, and reviewed 35 doctoral dissertations, 18 post-doctoral dissertations and 10 proceedings for the award of a scientific title.
Member of National and Institutions
He has been a member of the Main Council of Science and Higher Education (1982-1984), a member of the Computer Science Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1996-1999 and 2003 to date), the chairman of the MBA Rating Chapter of the Forum Management Education Association, a member of the Polish Society for Safety and Reliability, and a member of the Scientific Council of the Polish Association of Artificial Intelligence. For four years he has been the chairman of the Polish Chapter of the IEEE SMC Society.
State Decorations and Awards
He was the winner of a Second-Class Minister of Shipping Award in 1973; First-Class Minister of Foreign Trade and Maritime Economy Awards in 1975 and 1980, First-Class Minister of the Head of the Office of Maritime Economy Awards in 1985 and 1987, Minister of Transport awards, a First-Class Shipping and Communications Award in 1988, as well as several awards of the Rectors of the Maritime Higher School and Gdynia Maritime Academy for his scientific work. He was also awarded the Gold Cross of Merit and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia restituta.
