Library
The literary and research needs of the academic community are met by Gdynia Maritime University's main library which began life at the Maritime School in Tczew in 1920. In 1930, the school and the library were relocated to Gdynia, where it has served students, doctoral candidates and academic staff for more than 90 years on the University's main Morska Street campus.
Today's library has a collection of more than 100,000 books, some 9,000 periodicals and more than 200 special collections. The library is computerised and has at its disposal a reading room with books, magazines and Internet access – open until late evening. The library's modern Integrated Library System (VTLS – VIRTUA) provides easy access to its catalogue, helping users find resources for reading, learning, research and teaching, order books, and renew their existing loans. Through cooperation with all the academic libraries in the Tricity area, it also provides access to a more extensive catalogue of titles and works.
A second branch of the GMU library is in the Faculty of Navigation building, near Skwer Kościuszki, in central Gdynia. The electronic student identity card is used as a library pass at both locations.
